Lyon is full of beautiful little shops with handmade things. Walk around Ainay (near metro stop Ampère), Les Pentes (the hill just north of Place des Terreaux), or Croix-Rousse, and you’ll find artisan shops and concept boutiques in droves. These are a few of my personal favorites.
I have bought many a gift from this pretty little store in Ainay. Mathûvû has quirky cards, pretty jewelry, lovely home decor items and notebooks, even clothes, dishes, and games for children. I can’t go in without wanting to buy everything.
43 rue de la Charité 69002 Lyon
Metro: Ampère, Perrache
Open Monday 2pm to 7pm, Tuesday through Saturday 10am to 7pm (hours may vary)
This little shop has a place in my heart because it was right by my last apartment in Lyon. In the front is a little shop with homeware, paper goods, jewelry, and other fun little items made by artists, and in the back is a cozy café. They also host crafty workshops. Talk about doing it all!

Les Bougies de Charroux
If you’re going to buy someone a candle (including yourself), let it be at Les Bougies de Charroux in Vieux Lyon. There are candles of all scents and sizes – they come in little glass jars with lids that screw on. The candles are handmade in Auvergne and they will make your house smell amazing (and they won’t break the bank, either). I have one in the scent “Exotic” that I couldn’t bear to give away.
64 Rue Saint Jean – 69005 Lyon
Metro: Vieux Lyon, Saint Paul (bus)
Open every day (what?!) from around 11am to 7pm, closed from 1:30pm to 2:30pm. Open at 10:30am on Wednesday through Saturday.
And more in Croix Rousse…
If you’re up in Croix Rousse, pop into Bonnesoeurs, a cozy concept shop with clothes, jewelry, gifts, and home items. My friend Shannon loves it, and she has excellent taste in literally everything. (8 Rue du Chariot d’Or, 69004 LYON. Metro Croix-Rousse. See Facebook page for hours.)
Croix-Rousse is just chock full of little artisan shops – I also like Summertime for their delicate jewelry with geometric shapes and accent colors. (2 rue d’Ivry, 69004 Lyon. Metro Croix-Rousse. Open Monday through Saturday, closed for lunch and Monday morning.)
If artisan shops are your thing, I recommend you walk up (or down) the Montée de la Croix-Rousse, a pedestrian path lined with shops and cafés that leads from the 1st arrondissement up to Croix-Rousse.
Or, if you’re not feeling the steep hill, just wander around Les Pentes de la Croix Rousse (the winding streets at the bottom of the hill). Start with Rue Romarin, Rue des Capucins, and Rue René Leynaud (and its Village des Créateurs). When you’re ready for a coffee break, you’ll find several of the best cafés in Lyon around here.
I’m going back to Lyon soon (yay!) and I can’t wait to check out the brand new Maya Shop, which I just discovered on Instagram.
Any other recommendations I should check out while I’m in town? Can’t wait to be back!
P.S. If you appreciate art as a souvenir, you might like to know about the Marché de la Création on Quai Romain Rolland in Vieux Lyon on Sunday mornings. Local artists sell their work from 8am to 1pm along the Saône river.
